Introduction
The brief
A gala film has one shot. It plays on a big screen, to a room that’s been drinking and talking, in the minutes before someone stands up and asks for money. No rewind, no second viewing, imperfect sound. Best Buddies pairs people with and without intellectual disabilities. The temptation with a cause like that is to make a montage — lots of faces, swelling music, a voiceover about impact. It plays fine and it moves nobody. We built it around one friendship instead. Two buddies, their actual relationship, start to finish.
